Autism In Mind

Valuing 'EVERY' autistic person!

This group has been set up by Autism-in-Mind as a Campaign Group to show this government the desperate need for the Autism Bill Currently making its way through parliament. Phil Hope MP, Minister for Care Services in February announced a package of measures to improve the lives of people living with autism in England. The government now believes that the Autism Bill is no longer necessary and that the package deal announced will be enough. We do not agree. Phil Hope has pledged that these measures will have teeth. We would like to know what ‘will have teeth’ actually means. What we do not need is to be policing our Local Authorities for any of these measures which we are being told will improve our lives. That is why AIM would like people to join our campaign. Please not that if you join this group you are signing up in support of the measures that AIM would like to see adopted all over England for ‘EVERY’ autistic person. All too often we see children and adults excluded from provision simply because of their IQ. Autism is autism is autism and we need to be valuing every autistic person.

An update from Catherine Mooney

It gives me VERY great pleasure to be able to announce that my IGCSE English Literature course for home educators is ready to take its first intake of students! You can see course samples and further details on my web-site at www.catherinemooneytutoring.co.uk

As I am sure you already know, English Literature is a wonderful IGSCE. Not only does it introduce students to some fantastic texts, but it sits happily alongside IGCSE English Language, sharing some of the writing tasks. If you are looking for a IGCSE that your child would enjoy, and you are also doing English Language, this could be a really good choice. The texts we will be studying are Pride and Prejudice, The Importance of Being Earnest and the Edexcel Anthology. I am very pleased to announce that I have also produced a fully annotated version of Pride and Prejudice, in book format, especially for 13 â€" 16 year old students. (It will be available to buy separately from Amazon from August 2009.)

The complete course will be available from September, but for those wanting to make an early start, the first component, Pride and prejudice, is available from the end of July.

As with my IGCSE English Language course, I have kept costs as low as is humanly possible and there is a further discount if you are already taking my IGCSE English Language course, and also for siblings. Additionally there is an easy payment option. Obviously with a literature course, extra texts and DVDs are required but I have been working hard to get the best possible prices and have produced a bundle of 2 set texts and 2 DVDs for £25!

Incidentally, apart from my OU work, I now work exclusively with home-educated children (they are so much more fun and brighter than their school peers; plus the standard of work is so much higher â€" and yes, you can quote me!).

If you have any questions please email me or you can phone 01952 605865.

Catherine

PS WordWeavers, the pre-IGCSE English course for 9+, will be available from early October.

Keisha Buchanan Leaves Sugababes

Keisha Buchanan, The last original member of all-girl-group the Sugababes has left the band.

Keisha, 24, will now launch a solo career, a statement from the group confirmed.

Buchanan will be replaced by the UK's Eurovision Song Contest singer Jade Ewen.

A statement on the band's website read: "The current line-up of the Sugababes has disbanded.

"Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah will continue as the Sugababes and will be joined by new member Jade Ewen.

"They release their album Sweet 7 on November 23 through Island Records.

"Keisha Buchanan will continue to record for Island Records as a solo artist."

The group have recently been subject of media speculation after Amelle Berrabah reportedly went missing two weeks ago.

Buchanan defended herself against reports she was the troublemaker of the band.

A report in The Sun claimed bandmate Berrabah was missing following a disagreement with Buchanan after she failed to perform with her and Heidi Range at London's Movida.

But Buchanan, 24, tweeted: "I may come across as a hard nut sometimes, but I'm actually really sensitive and it destroys me to think people see me as the longest standing member and assume that I'm the b***h who causes people to walk, and it's totally untrue and unfair."

The group was formed in 1998 by original members Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy.

Range replaced Donaghy in 2001 and in 2005 Buena was replaced by Berrabah.

Jade Ewen represented the UK at the 54th Eurovision Song Contest, performing My Time which is written by the legendary composer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and another entertainment business legend Diane Warren. She finished fifth, bringing the UK its best placing since 2002.

The lucky girl to get a place in the band, that's been called the most successful British female act of the 21st century, gets the news just she releases her new single My Man on Monday, taking her career into another turn and now she'll be performing under Sugarbabes together with Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah .(Click Here to Know More)

Breaking News from SKY: British Child 'Dead' After Samoan Tsunami

At least 82 people have been killed - reportedly including a British child - after a Pacific Ocean earthquake sent a tsunami into the Samoan islands.

Destruction in Pago Plaza in American Samoa

Cars and people were swept out to sea by the fast-churning waters, as survivors fled to higher ground.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in the Samoan tsunami."

A two-year-old British child had earlier been reported missing on Samoa. Sources now say the youngster has been found dead.

Stephen Rogers, the UK's honorary consul on the island, said the child's parents were receiving consular assistance.

Two Australians, including a six-year-old girl, were also among the dead, officials said.

Signs of devastation were everywhere, with a large boat washed onto the edge of a road and floodwaters swallowing up vehicles and homes.

The 8.3 magnitude quake struck about 125 miles from Samoa, a South Pacific island nation of 180,000 people located almost halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii.

The quake's epicentre was even closer to neighbouring American Samoa, a US territory of about 65,000 people.

Four 15 to 20ft-high waves hit the island, reaching up to a mile inland, according to National Park of American Samoa's Mike Reynolds.

The quake hit off the islands' coast

Hampered by power and communications outages, officials are still struggling to determine damage and casualties.

Samoan police commissioner Lilo Maiava said 63 deaths had been confirmed.

But he added that officials were still searching the devastated areas, so the number of deaths might rise soon.

Hundreds of injured were being treated by health workers, Mr Maiava added.

At least 19 people were killed on American Samoa, officials there said.
Governor Togiola Tulafono, who was in Honolulu for a conference, told reporters more victims may be found when rescuers reach areas that are inaccessible by roads.

There were unconfirmed reports of at least five more people dead in the island nation of Tonga, west of the Samoan islands.

An Indian Ocean tsunami on December 26, 2004, which killed about 230,000 people across 11 countries, is the worst on record.

From Trek Movie.com:

Cho’s FlashFoward Gets Full Season

Chris Pine isn’t the only Star Trek cast member who is getting more work. Star Trek’s new Sulu, John Cho, who is one of the main cast members for the ABC show FlashForward, has also locked in more work. Yesterday Variety reported that ABC has picked up the show for a full season with an order of 25 total episodes. The series is getting good ratings and if things keep going well, will likely get a 2nd season.

John Cho in FlashForward

As noted in previous articles, all the main cast members for the Star Trek film have signed on for options for two additional films. However, that does not mean they can break any other commitments they sign on to when Paramount calls. If a Star Trek sequel went into production in 2010 and it didn’t fall into the hiatus between seasons, then ABC and Paramount would have to find a way to get Cho onto Trek.

Flash Forward Premieres Tonight in the UK on Five

The epic new drama series Flash Forward, from the US, premieres tonight on Five in the UK at 9pm and is certainly one to watch.

So what’s the lowdown?
A mysterious global event causes everyone to blackout simultaneously for two minutes and seventeen seconds exactly. In that time, everyone glimpses their life six months from now. When they wake up, everyone is left reeling, wondering if what they saw will actually happen…

Scary stuff. Were their futures not very bright then?
Some of what they see is not pretty it has to be said, with adultery, alcoholism and murder all featuring among the premonitions. But don’t worry, FBI agent Mark Benford, played by Joseph Fiennes, and his partner Demetri Noh, (American Pie and Star Trek's John Cho) are determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Sounds like a star-studded cast?
It is. Aside from Joseph and John, there’s also This Life and Coupling actor Jack Davenport, Lost’s Dominic Monaghan and Law & Order’s Courtney B Vance.

So it’s big deal Stateside then?
Ratings for ABC’s premiere of "FlashForward" were very strong last Thursday, with an average total audience of 12.47 million viewers, and the pilot went down a storm with the press with some claiming it’s bigger and better than both Lost and Heroes put together.

What are the long term plans for the series?

Producers say that at the very least they need at least three seasons to tell the complete story:

"We know what the ultimate season is and the penultimate season is. For in between, we know the various seasons but we are treating it like an accordion. In success, [the show] can go seven years. In less success, it would need to go three years to work. The end game of the show, to be properly done, really requires two full seasons focusing on the end game."

And here’s what co-creator and executive producer David Goyer said:

"We pitched [ABC] a fairly excessive plan… I mean, we know exactly the shot that season one ends on! They obviously said this resembles Lost, in that it’s a really cool script, but [they asked], ‘Do you have any idea where it goes?’ We said, ‘Yeah we know how the whole season ends and how the whole series ends’, and they went, ‘Holy shit!’"

Catch the first episode tonight then on Five, and here's a glimpse below:

Lessons in law breaking

You could almost begin to feel sorry for the civil servants at the DCSF who have been inundated with requests under the Freedom of Information Act about every aspect of the now infamous home education review since it was first announced in January.

Baroness Delyth Morgan was leaving nothing to chance as she delivered a string of stigmatising soundbites in a smear campaign designed to demonise home educators, encouraging the usual suspects out from under their stones to take part in the state sponsored sport of home ed bashing. It was therefore hardly surprising that interested individuals should start asking questions about the background to the review, its cost, the cosy relationship between the Department and the NSPCC, and, not least of all, evidence to substantiate claims by some local authorities that home education was being used as a cover for child abuse, forced marriage, domestic servitude and every other social ill.

However, while the Freedom of Information Act sets out a maximum statutory timescale for responses to requests made to public bodies under its provisions, it appears that the DCSF is a law unto itself and has failed to respond at all to a significant number of straightforward questions.

For example, someone was curious about the overall cost to the Department of the review, but this request , submitted on 6th March 2009 and due for a statutory response no later than 6th April, has not been satisfied at the time of writing (3rd May) despite the questioner asking for an internal review of the DCSF's handling of the request. What can possibly be difficult about sourcing budgetary information, and what could possibly be contentious about telling a member of the public how much is being paid to the various agencies (not individuals) involved in the execution of the review? If they have nothing to hide....

Similarly, this request dated 28 February, which simply sought copies of correspondence between the DCSF and the individual they commissioned to lead the review over the previous six months, has been stuck on a merry-go-round of computer generated responses ever since, none of which contains the information requested or an explanation of why it is being withheld.

There are many more for which no responses have been forthcoming by the statutory deadline, or even at all. Judging by the annotations on the What Do They Know website, which facilitates the making of FOI requests to public bodies and records their responses, there is a veritable army of dissatisfied DCSF 'askers' out there.

Civil servants may well be busy, but they are paid by the public purse to maintain a basic level of administrative competence and effectiveness. Besides, the departmental budget allocation must surely have taken into consideration the extra workload inherent in conducting the review?

Perhaps we will never know because we will never be told. Meanwhile, we can only assume that the DCSF must not only have a lot to hide, but that it also believes itself to be above the law.

Drivers Face 'Worst Traffic Jam Of The Year'

12:00am UK, Friday October 23, 2009

Lulu Sinclair, Sky News Online

The start of the school half-term holidays and bad weather are likely to lead to the worst traffic congestion of the year this weekend, it is predicted.

M25 and M4 junction near Heathrow

The M25 is expected to be very busy

The AA expects a build-up of queues on roads to airports and on major routes from 10am this morning with the heaviest congestion from 3pm onwards.

The motoring organisation predicts that 15 million cars will take to the roads and congestion will go up by a fifth.

Heavy showers are forecast across the UK this weekend, as families head abroad - their last chance of a break in the sun before Christmas.

Drivers have also been warned of the darker evenings when the clocks go back on Sunday.

"After a disappointing summer, and now that the autumn drizzle is upon us, we're expecting many families to head to sunnier climes for a few days," the AA's Stewart Topp said.

Boeing 737

People are also jetting off abroad

"Unless you really need to hit the road on Friday, it would be best to delay heading off till later on Saturday when the traffic should be quieter - the last thing you need on a long journey is the kids whining as you sit in stationary traffic."

Last year, the AA attended more than 100,000 breakdowns over half-term - up to 25% busier on certain days.

An AA spokesman told Sky News Online that the best way to cope with a difficult journey was to "plan ahead and leave plenty of time".

"The usual routes are expected to be clogged up, basically just because of the large amount of vehicles on the most popular routes," he said.

"Lots of people go on trips to the West and North West and inevitably that part of the M25, say, is very slow."
