Latest US SCI FI TV RATINGS (Note: All ratings are based on the final national numbers, with the exception of the numbers listed for Friday. Friday’s numbers are based on preliminary fast affiliate numbers).

Monday

It finally appears as if "Heroes" has stabilized in the ratings. The show’s fifth episode this past Monday drew 5.55 million viewers and a 2.4 A18-49 rating. That was up 2% from the week prior among viewers and even in A18-49 rating.

Wednesday

"Eastwick" was mostly even from the week prior with 5.08M viewers (-1%) and a 1.7 A18-49 rating (-6%). The show is continually competing for last place in the hour, however ABC actually seems pleased with its performance [Deadline]:

"Eastwick has been the quiet success story," a top ABC exec tells me. "Especially because we put very little marketing money against it." So the series sounds safe for now.

Thursday

"FlashForward" was the most-watched sci-fi program for the week, with 9.07 million viewers and a 3.1 A18-49 rating. Fox’s "Fringe" continues to perform well below last season’s average, although it was up slightly this week among A18-49 (+5% to a 2.2 rating) and even from the week prior among total viewers (-1% to 5.78 million viewers). Also airing on Thursday night was The CW combination of "The Vampire Diaries" (3.88 million viewers and a 1.8 A18-49 rating) and "Supernatural" (2.58 million viewers and a 1.2 A18-49 rating). "The Vampire Diaries" hit a post-series premiere high among both viewers (+10% from the week prior) and adults 18-49 (+6% from the week prior), while"Supernatural" saw a modest 5% bump in viewers and was even in A18-49 rating from the week prior.

Friday

"Ghost Whisperer" (8.21 million viewers and a 2.0 A18-49 rating) and "Medium" (8.04 million viewers and a 1.9 A18-49 rating) again led the field on Friday night. Both shows were down slightly from their respective week-ago performances (-7% and -9% among viewers and A18-49 rating for "Ghost Whisperer" and -3% and -5% among viewers and A18-49 rating for "Medium"). Over on The CW, "Smallville" hit a season-high with 2.62 million viewers (+15% from the week prior) and a 1.1 A18-49 rating (+22% from the week prior).

Notes: Dollhouse did not air this weekend. It returns with new episodes October 23rd. As always, the chart for the previous week’s ratings follows below.

Angry scenes face Griffin at BBC

Extracts from Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time, BBC One

BNP leader Nick Griffin has insisted he is "not a Nazi" during his first appearance on the BBC's Question Time.

The political discussion programme was recorded as anti-fascist campaigners protested outside Television Centre.

Mr Griffin was booed at the start of the recording and accused of trying to "poison politics" as he was attacked by fellow panellists and the audience.

He said he had been "demonised" and repeatedly denied saying things which have been attributed to him.

QUESTION TIME
Thursday, 22 October, 2009
2230 BST, BBC One

The BBC has defended the invitation to the leader of the anti-immigration party to appear on the programme, saying it had a duty to be impartial.

During the show the panel covered topics including whether it was fair for the BNP to "hijack" images of Winston Churchill, whether immigration policy had fuelled the BNP's popularity and whether Mr Griffin's appearance was an early Christmas present for the party.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw said what distinguished the BNP from other parties was that other parties "have a moral compass", adding: "Nazism didn't and neither I'm afraid does the BNP."

If there is a case for censorship, it should be debated and decided in Parliament. Political censorship cannot be outsourced to the BBC or anyone else
Mark Thompson
BBC director general

Mr Griffin, who said his father had been in the RAF during World War II, said he had been "relentlessly attacked and demonised... I am not a Nazi and never have been".

Mr Griffin repeatedly denied he had said many of the things he had been quoted as saying including a quote attributed to him in the Mail on Sunday that Adolf Hitler went "a bit too far".

He claimed his efforts to change the BNP meant he was unpopular with the far right. "There are Nazis in Britain and they loathe me," he said.

He admitted sharing a platform with former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke - but claimed he had been trying to win over "youngsters" Duke was trying to "lead astray".

'Not racist'

And, asked about a quote attributed to him in which he equated six million deaths in the Holocaust with the flat earth theory he replied that "European law" stopped him explaining.

"I can't tell you why I used to say those things anymore than I can tell you why I have changed my mind," he said.

Mr Straw replied: "There is not law here that stops you explaining yourself."

The justice secretary said when anybody put a specific quotation to Mr Griffin he tried to "wriggle out of it".

Conservative frontbencher Baroness Warsi said Mr Griffin was "a thoroughly deceptive man".

HAVE YOUR SAY
If Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time has the ultimate effect of shaking the 'great' british public free of their political apathy and encourages them to ask probing questions, then his appearance will be a good thing
John Walker, Belfast

Asked whether immigration policy had fuelled the BNP, Mr Straw said he did not think it had and said he thought the BNP had been boosted by discontent with the main parties over issues like expenses.

But Baroness Warsi said politicians had a responsibility to take on the BNP on the issue of immigration: "Many people who vote for the BNP are not racist and therefore what we have to do is go out and say to these people as mainstream political parties we are prepared to listen."

Mr Griffin blamed the "political elite" for imposing "an enormous multicultural experiment on the British people".

Audience challenge

But his references to Britain's "indigenous people" prompted other members of the panel to challenge him to say he meant white people.

Mr Griffin said the colour was "irrelevant" and said Mr Straw would not dare go to New Zealand and tell a Maori he was not "indigenous". "We are the aborigines here," he claimed.

Protesters storm into BBC Televison Centre

But he was accused of making up facts. He was also challenged by several black and Asian members of the audience.

One man asked Mr Griffin: "Where do you want me to go? I love this country, I'm part of this country."

Following the programme, Mr Griffin told BBC News too much of the programme had been a a beat up Nick Griffin programme instead of Question Time".

He added that of the 25 or so allegations made against him in the programme - he was only allowed to answer four or five of them and that was "grossly unfair".

While the programme was being recorded the anti-BNP protest continued, with the whole west London BBC building "locked down" for more than an hour and the road outside closed.

The Metropolitan Police say six protesters were arrested and three police officers injured in the protests.

Barriers breached

Mr Griffin accused the protesters of "attacking the rights of millions of people to listen to what I've got to say and listen to me being called to account by other politicians".

But Weyman Bennett from Unite Against Fascism accused the BBC of "rolling out the red carpet" to Mr Griffin and said his appearance on the flagship discussion programme "will lead to the growth of a fascist party" and promote violence against ethnic minorities.

It's not for the BBC to censor and say they can't be on
Mark Byford
BBC deputy director general

About 25 people managed to get through the gates and run towards the BBC building when security guards opened them to let in a car. A few minutes later they were led, dragged or carried back outside.

There were also protests outside BBC buildings in Bristol, Liverpool, Nottingham, Glasgow and Belfast.

Earlier on Thursday, BBC director general Mark Thompson said it was up to the government to ban the BNP from the airwaves if it felt Mr Griffin should not be allowed to take part in Question Time.

Welsh Secretary Peter Hain, who had tried to stop the broadcast, said: "The BBC should be ashamed of single-handedly doing a racist, fascist party the biggest favour in its grubby history."

But Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was a matter for the corporation and he did not want to interfere with it, while Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw said that most of the cabinet did not share Mr Hain's view.

BBC Deputy Director General Mark Byford said it had been "appropriate" to invite Mr Griffin to appear given the support the BNP received in the last European elections when it gained its first Euro MPs.

He said: "He was scrutinised and challenged along with the other panellists heavily by the audience, that was right in our view.

"It would have been quite wrong for the BBC to have said 'yes, you are allowed to stand in elections, yes you have a level of support that now meets the threshold but the BBC doesn't think that you should be on'.

"We have no views on the politics or the political leaders what we do hold absolutely dear is that due impartiality is a value we uphold and that's why Mr Griffin was on tonight."

From BBC NEWS: Cancer jab 'unlikely' death cause

A girl who died shortly after being given a cervical cancer vaccine had a "serious underlying medical condition", an NHS Trust has said.

Natalie Morton died in hospital following a cervical cancer jab at school

NHS Coventry said the vaccination was "most unlikely to have caused the death" of Natalie Morton, 14.

She was given the Cervarix jab at Coventry's Blue Coat School on Monday and fell ill a few hours later.

The government said its national cervical cancer immunisation programme should continue.

Dr Caron Grainger, joint director of public health for NHS Coventry and Coventry City Council, said the results of a preliminary post-mortem examination had "revealed a serious underlying medical condition which was likely to have caused death".

"We are awaiting further test results which will take some time," she said. "However indications are that it was most unlikely that the HPV vaccination was the cause of death."

The injection - part of a national immunisation programme - protects against the human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted disease linked to most cervical cancers.

The Department of Health has ordered the batch of vaccine to be quarantined as a precaution, but insists there is no reason to stop the programme.

Public health minister Gillian Merron said: "We hope that girls continue to protect themselves against cervical cancer by having this vaccine."

Meanwhile, the vaccine manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, announced it was recalling the batch - AHPVA043BB - for testing.

Head teacher Dr Julie Roberts and the Bishop of Coventry on the death of Natalie Morton
The Department of Health said it was working with the NHS and regulatory bodies to thoroughly investigate Natalie Morton's case.

A department spokesman said: "No link can be made between the death and the vaccine until all the facts are known.

"Results of tests on the batch of vaccine will be announced as soon as they are known.

"The HPV vaccination programme can continue as planned - there is no reason for the campaign to be suspended or interrupted."

He added that minor delays might occur in the next day or so while some areas awaited fresh supplies of HPV vaccine to replace quarantined stock.

NHS Coventry has not suspended its HPV programme but has decided to reschedule catch-up clinics planned for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Natalie's death has left schoolmates and staff shocked and saddened, headteacher Dr Julie Roberts said.

She described Natalie as a "happy, easy-going child who worked hard".

A routine programme of vaccinating 12- and 13-year-old girls started in September 2008 using the Cervarix vaccine. A catch-up campaign is now under way for older girls.

It is thought about a million girls have already safely received the jab.

More than 1.4 million doses have been given out, of which there have been 4,657 suspected reactions reported, according to the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency.

There are more than 100 types of HPV but only 13 of them are known to cause cancer.

Cervarix, licensed for use in Europe since September 2007, protects against two strains of HPV that cause more than 70% of cervical cancer cases.

In the UK, about 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and about 1,000 die from it.

Vaccination is not compulsory and consent is required before it is administered to the under-16s.
Parents or young people concerned about the safety of any vaccine are being advised to speak to their GP, visit www.nhs.uk or call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.(Click Here to Know More)

National He-art Project to Launch at Sheffield Showcase

Art submitted by home educated children from Sheffield and across the country, in a bid to share the reasons why they love learning outside of school, is to be exhibited in conjunction with Sheffield Source as part of the City's Vacant Shops Strategy. The press launch will be taking place at the Source project office on Pinstone Street on Friday 16th October at 10.45am, and will see the start of a month long exhibition in one of the Charter Square windows, before touring the country.

What could be better than art as a medium for our children to share their feelings? It’s expressive, limitless, and non-confrontational. Those were the thoughts of home educating parent Chloe White when she came up with the idea of He-art, an opportunity for home educated children across the UK to submit artworks with the theme of what home education means to them.

The children have produced the art, some of which can be previewed at www.he-art.org.uk, in response to the controversial Badman review, which would see their right to freedom in learning compromised. The review, published on June 11th 2009, and followed by a public consultation which will run till October 19th 2009, contains proposals which would require a fundamental change to the law concerning parental responsibility for a child's education. Should the proposals be implemented, the law would also need to be changed to give local authority officials entry to a private home on demand. In addition there would have to be changes to primary legislation and related statutory guidance in order to permit children to be questioned without a parent being present.

Two other parents joined Chloe to organise the project: Tam Palmer hopes to help stop the proposed changes that threaten the home education she has planned for her two toddler boys before they have even started it, while Monika Dutta, a practicing artist and community facilitator, felt that her previous experience in coordinating similar projects could now be put to use enabling her to contribute in a tangible way to the efforts home educators are making to resist proposed threats to their lifestyles.

Eshe Graham, 13, one of the featured artists, who has been home educated for almost three years, said, "I wanted to do a group piece so I decided to invite some of my friends from my art group. We based our artwork on Freedom of Thought, using thought bubbles to express our feelings, with separate bubbles for each person so we could each show our own feelings and thoughts about home-education. Each bubble was different and the finished piece looked great."

Katie Tordoff, 12, from Nottingham, who has been home educated for seven years and also contributed to the group work with Eshe, added, "I contributed to He-art because it sounded really good fun! A fun way for people to understand all about home education. I have now found out I am dyslexic, so one to one learning is much easier for me, I have someone to explain things to me when I don't understand. If I get confused about something, my Mum can explain it to me again and again. I think He-art is a good way to communicate with the general public, about a subject they do not understand. For me it's great to do it in a creative way. I really enjoy art, I'm very lucky that I have the time and chance to visit lots of art exhibitions and take part in fun art workshops. I work with some very talented artists, ask them lots of questions and do things that I just wouldn't be able to do at school."

The Source, working in conjunction with Sheffield City Council to improve the look of the area around the Sevenstone development site, is helping to develop local talent by not only giving Visual Merchandising students a platform to hone and show off their skills, but also by giving local people and businesses an opportunity to contribute to the city's improvement.

The hope is that He-art will be able to run annually as another exciting part of the HE calendar.
